Course Content

The detailed videos explain a key concept like the use of multiple controllers, layering, and articulation switching. Watch live scoring examples as we bring all those techniques together. Learn in both Logic and Cubase, but the techniques can be applied to any DAW. You can also download the DAW file or MIDI and see exactly how it was done.

  • Learn to breathe life into your sampled orchestrations so they do not sound flat and artificial.
  • Discover techniques for getting the best results from inexpensive libraries.
  • Understand how sampling technology works, to get the most out of your computer’s resources.
  • Learn alternative ways of working you may not have considered.

Course Structure

1. Introduction
A map of the journey ahead, and a demonstration of how the whole thing works
2. Hardware And Software
What you need, what you can get away with, and how to maximise your resources. Explore choices of DAW and sample players. A short introduction to the two big platforms in the sampled world – Kontakt and Play.
3. Multiple Articulations
Learn how to use multiple articulations to create a lifelike performance plus a variety of approaches to changing articulations including a look at Expression Maps and Articulation IDs.
4. Controllers
CC’s (Continuous Controllers) are your link to the virtual musician and in this unit we show you how they work, how to use them and why they are vital.
5. Layering And Blending
Mixing and matching samples creates an almost limitless variety of sounds, breathes new potential into older and cheaper libraries and adds expression and realism.
6. Reverb And Room Placement
How to get all your virtual instruments to sound as if they are all sitting in the correct place in the same room.
7. Legato
How and when to use legato samples, their potential, and their limitations.
8. Realtime Performance Samples
How samples of musical events, like crescendos and runs, can breathe new life into your music and how best to use them.
9. Dynamics
This is one of the hardest things to get right. Discover different approaches to controlling both volume and timbre, so your virtual orchestra plays with the expression and passion of live players.
10. Surround Sound
How to get sampled instruments into a surround recording setup and why 4.0 is probably a better solution than 5.1.

I am enjoying the scoring demonstration since I have never actually watched anyone compose a theme using a full orchestra. It’s very enlightening.

Your instruction videos are very inspiring. The way you address issues is always clear and sometimes hilarious, as you also show your own clumsiness when trying to find an interesting melody or chord progression.
